The First Seed Assessment Begins to Show Differences

Ground photographs and aerial images began showing different vegetation patterns and different surface behavior across the adjoining pasture treatments.

Both pasture types developed visible vegetation, but the patterns were not identical.

The smooth pasture provided a more uniform and accessible surface. The stump-retained area contained more obstacles and more residual material, but it also retained greater surface structure.

The comparison was becoming more complex than determining which pasture became green first.

Observations

Smooth pasture:

  • Easier to walk, drive, and visually inspect

  • Fewer physical obstacles

  • Areas of exposed soil remained visible

  • Evidence of surface movement and erosion was observed

  • Some localized ponding or drainage differences were visible

  • Oats were the predominant germination success. Stunted due to lack of rain but widespread germination had occurred.

  • Wheat showed marginal success approximately 5% germination

  • Rye showed marginal success. Early warming and drought conditions impacted.

  • White Clover Landino showed minimal germination

Stump-retained pasture:

  • More stumps, roots, limbs, and woody residue

  • More difficult equipment access

  • Greater variation in seed contact with the soil

  • More surface material protecting portions of the ground

  • Less obvious surface movement in several areas

  • Oats were the predominant germination success. Stunted due to lack of rain but widespread germination had occurred.

  • Wheat showed marginal success approximately 20% germination

  • Rye showed marginal success approximately 10%. Early warming and drought conditions impacted, but conditions were better on these pastures.

  • White Clover Landino showed minimal germination


Observations

Current working hypotheses include:
-Heavy preparation may have increased compaction in the smooth pasture
-Removal of roots and surface material may have increased erosion
-Reduced disturbance in the stump pasture may have preserved more favorable soil habitat
-Residual material may also reduce uniform seed-to-soil contact
These remain hypotheses requiring measurement.

Collected images of all seeded areas.

Next Step

Develop repeatable sampling locations and compare compaction, soil structure, erosion, vegetation, and biological indicators. Repeat assessment in a few weeks.
