Pre-Harvest Documentation & Mobilization
Before and as logging began, the property entered a transition from standing timber to an active work site. Photographs, drone images and observations of roads, drainage, vegetation and ground conditions provide the baseline needed to judge what the harvest actually changed.
A useful harvest record needs a clear starting point.
Before logging changed the landscape, the property still reflected its timberland condition. Roads and trails existed in their pre-logging form, drainage followed the existing terrain, and the ground had not yet experienced repeated passes from logging equipment.
Photos and drone imagery from this period are particularly valuable because the scale of change after a clearcut can be difficult to appreciate from memory alone.
Mobilization marked the beginning of physical disturbance. Logging requires equipment to cut and process trees, skid material to loading areas, load trucks and move timber off the property. Roads and working areas therefore become part of the harvest even when they are not the product being sold.
The weather and soil conditions during this stage also matter. Heavy equipment operating on wet ground can have a very different impact from the same equipment working during dry conditions.
For the experiment, this baseline gives us something against which to compare the condition of roads, soils, drainage, vegetation and the overall property after the harvest.
Observations
• Pre-harvest photos and drone imagery are important evidence, not just attractive before pictures.
• Roads, drainage and ground conditions should be documented before heavy equipment arrives.
• Mobilization itself begins changing the property.
• Weather and soil moisture can influence the amount of disturbance caused by logging equipment.
• A visual baseline makes later claims about improvement or damage much more objective.
Actions Taken
We documented the pre-harvest property through available photographs, drone imagery and observations, then allowed logging equipment and operations to mobilize into the designated harvest areas.
