Planning for Smooth vs Stump Retained Pastures

Our initial thoughts about these two options are explained.

Our initial thinking about the two options and what we expected vs what we initially found.

After a timber harvest, one of the first decisions in converting forestland to pasture is whether to fully clear and smooth the land or work with the rougher post-harvest condition.

The traditional approach is to remove stumps, burn or clear debris, grade the surface, and create a smooth, equipment-friendly pasture as quickly as possible. This approach may produce a cleaner-looking field, but it also adds significant cost, disturbs the soil structure, increases erosion risk, and may delay seeding while the heavy land-clearing work is completed.

This experiment compares the traditional smooth-pasture approach with a lower-disturbance, stump-retained approach. In the stump-retained pasture, stumps and some surface roughness are left in place while the land is seeded and gradually managed toward productive forage.

The core question is simple:

Which approach creates the most productive pasture in the shortest practical time following a timber harvest?

We are looking beyond appearance. The goal is not simply to make the land look finished. The goal is to determine which method produces usable forage faster, protects the soil more effectively, controls costs, and best supports the long-term conversion of timberland into productive pasture.

To conduct this long-term comparison, we left approximately half of the pasture area stump-retained and developed the other half as smooth pasture. The differences observed during the first several months were significant.

Stump-Retained Pasture Advantages

Although the soil biological community was negatively affected by the timber harvest, it was not destroyed. Within a few weeks, insects, fungi, and other organisms were visibly breaking down the remaining wood chips and slash. This began the process of capturing the carbon stored in that material and returning it to the soil.

The soil retained more of its natural structure and surface cover. As a result, it held considerably more moisture and experienced minimal runoff and erosion.

We also observed an abundance of wildlife tracks and sightings in the stump-retained pastures. Soil temperatures appeared to be moderated, even during drought conditions, because of the partial cover provided by slash, wood debris, and emerging plants.

Seed germination may have been somewhat lower in areas where slash and timber debris prevented good seed-to-soil contact. However, the plants that successfully established generally grew faster and appeared healthier.

Smooth Pasture Advantages

A smooth pasture is much easier to access and manage with equipment. In our case, the side-by-side can be used effectively with attachments that would not be practical in the stump-retained pasture.

Seeds spread on the smooth pasture also had consistently good soil contact after sowing.

Finally, a newly constructed smooth pasture is visually appealing. It looks clean, orderly, and finished.

Unfortunately, based on our initial observations, that is where the major advantages appear to end.

Seeds and soil were much more prone to washing into low areas and forming pockets and erosion ruts. During drought conditions, some seedlings did not survive at all, while many of those that remained were severely stunted.

Six months after the pasture was established, limbs and pieces of slash remaining in the smooth pasture showed very little evidence of decomposition. The insects, fungi, and other organisms normally responsible for breaking down this material appeared to be far less active or abundant.

Observations

The stumpy pastures remained an ugly mess where the smooth pastures were plagued with hard compacted clay and significant erosion. Both paths would present challenges and the next steps would be to come up with actions to take to overcome these challenges.

Initial Assessment Completed. Conduct more research and discuss the challenges with the team to come up with detailed action plans.

Next Step

Try to seed the two pasture types in a similar method to see which progresses better.
