One of the wheels on our dishwasher drawer repeatedly fell off during normal use. We reviewed several suggested repairs, but most appeared more complicated than necessary or did not directly address the worn attachment point.
After examining the wheel assembly, we found that the original pin had worn down over time. The small lip that once held the pin inside the receiving end of the bracket was no longer large enough to keep it secured. The wheel itself was still usable, but the worn pin could no longer hold it in place.
We looked for a simple replacement that could fit the existing opening without modifying the dishwasher drawer. A 5/16-inch body panel retainer, commonly available at auto parts stores, appeared to be the correct size.
We positioned the wheel where it belonged, inserted the body panel retainer through the existing hole, and pushed it into place. The retainer expanded inside the opening, grabbed the bracket, and held the wheel securely.
The initial result suggests that a common automotive fastener may provide a faster and less expensive solution than replacing the wheel assembly or attempting a more complicated repair.
Observations
The wheel was not failing because the wheel itself was damaged. The failure occurred because the original retaining pin had worn down and lost the lip that held it inside the bracket.
The 5/16-inch body panel retainer fit the existing opening without drilling, cutting, or modifying the dishwasher drawer. Once pushed into place, it expanded and held the wheel firmly.
The repair required only one inexpensive and readily available part. Installation took only a few moments and did not require any tools.
The immediate result was successful, but continued use will determine whether the retainer provides a lasting repair.
Actions Taken
We inspected the wheel assembly and identified the worn original retaining pin as the cause of the repeated failure.
