Converting a 40' Container for climate controlled storage and office.
We are converting a one-trip 40-foot high-cube shipping container into 25 feet of climate-controlled storage and a separate 15-foot farm office. The experiment will document the cost, construction process, performance, and practicality of using a container instead of constructing a conventional building.

Core Question:
Can a 40-foot high-cube shipping container be converted into practical farm office and storage space more quickly and affordably than constructing a conventional building?
Overview:
The farm needs secure storage for equipment, supplies, records, and other items that should not be exposed to extreme heat, cold, or humidity. We also need a dedicated office where we can manage farm operations, review experiment results, work with vendors, and conduct normal business activities.
Instead of constructing a conventional building, we are purchasing a one-trip 40-foot high-cube shipping container and converting it into two separate areas. Approximately 25 feet will be used for climate-controlled storage, while the remaining 15 feet will become a finished office.
This experiment will document the complete conversion, including site preparation, electrical service, insulation, interior framing, wall and ceiling finishes, heating and cooling, ventilation, moisture management, flooring, doors, lighting, and the separation between the office and storage areas.
We will also track the total investment, labor required, construction challenges, comfort of the finished office, protection provided to stored materials, energy use, and any problems created by adapting a steel container for occupied and climate-controlled use.
The goal is not simply to create a finished-looking space. We want to determine whether a shipping container provides a practical, durable, and cost-effective alternative to building a small office and storage structure from the ground up.
Current Result Summary:
We have selected a one-trip 40-foot high-cube shipping container for the conversion. The current plan assigns approximately 25 feet to climate-controlled storage and 15 feet to office space, with an insulated separation wall and doorway between the two areas.
The container conversion has not yet been completed. Initial planning is focused on site placement, electrical service, insulation, moisture control, interior framing, heating and cooling, and the materials needed to create a comfortable and durable finished space.
Results will be updated throughout construction and after the office and storage areas have been used through changing weather conditions.
